CONTRIBUTOR GUIDELINES

Everything you need to know before you submit.

Global South Academia publishes two kinds of contributed writing, Experience and Research Article/Viewpoint. This page sets out the editorial standards for both. Read it in full before preparing your submission.

01

Experience

500–1,000words
Freeto submit
Nocitations needed

First-person accounts of academic or professional experience: an admission, a fellowship, a first conference, a career transition, a major job, a place at a good college, or another defining early-career milestone. Any subject is admissible, provided the account is grounded in the contributor’s own lived experience.

  • Written in the first person, with a clear beginning, turning point, and outcome
  • Specific and verifiable: names, dates, and identifiable stages of the experience
  • Up to three optional photographs may accompany the piece
Example opening

“In March 2023, I received a rejection letter from the same DAAD programme I had applied to twice before. What changed by the fourth attempt was not my transcript, but how I framed my research proposal…”

02

Research Article/Viewpoint

1,200–2,500words
Freeto submit
APA7th edition

Researched opinion and analytical writing on questions affecting research and higher education across the Global South. A contributor may write on an open topic or respond to one of the themes issued for the current cycle, listed below.

  • Includes a title, a 150–200 word abstract, and the body of the essay
  • Every claim traceable to a credible, named source, cited in APA style
  • A full bibliography at the end, alphabetised with a hanging indent
Example citation

In text: “…approximately $55 per student annually (UNCTAD, 2023).”
In bibliography: UNCTAD. (2023). Least developed countries report 2023. United Nations Conference on Trade and Development.

When can you submit?

There is, in general, no fixed deadline for either section. Contributors may submit an Experience or a Research Article/Viewpoint piece at any time.

From time to time, Global South Academia issues a specific call for submissions built around a theme, and these calls may carry their own deadline. Details of any active call, including its deadline, are posted on our LinkedIn page and updated on the website. Outside of an active themed call, submissions remain open year-round.
